In the Second World War, the British used the site for an airfield, which the Royal Air Force utilised as a major airbase in South Asia. The old runway became a part of the drag racing circuit in the mid 1950s with the establishment of the Madras Motor Sports Club (MMSC), and thus Red Hills became the home of motorsport in Chennai and attracted large numbers of fans and racers alike during the years prior to the late 1980s when all racing moved to an entirely new venue in Sriperumbudur.
