That all changed in 1928, when the first retail establishment came to T. Nagar Nalli Chinnasami Chetty's showroom. What was originally just another textile shop soon grew into the first Kancheepuram silk saree showroom in T. Nagar (by 1935) and was the catalyst for the retail revolution to take place in T. Nagar. More retail stores opened in the area, leading to an increase in the amount of activity on the once-quiet streets. Then, there was a sudden pause.
The people of Madras lived in fear as they were faced with possible air raids from Japan, which caused them to prepare to evacuate. The shops were closed; the streets were empty; and T. Nagar, which was beginning to come to life once again, became quiet for a couple of days.
However, like most stories, this was not the ending to the story of T. Nagar. After some time, after everything had settled, the people returned, and the shops reopened. T. Nagar resumed as it had previously, except it was now moving at a faster and stronger pace than ever before.
Over the years, the original small textile store grew into a large area with many stores. Ranganathan Street and Usman Road became two of the busiest shopping streets in all of India. Today, when you walk through T. Nagar, it is hard to believe that it all began from empty fields and a single business.
The transformation of T. Nagar, starting and continuing from quiet to loud, and from basic to very colourful, is an inspiring story.
