R A Puram
Raja Annamalai Puram, also known as R.A. Puram, serves as a Chennai neighbourhood that showcases traditional elements, historical features, and cultural aspects.
In the past, Porur was a quiet suburban region located on the western edge of the city. The pace of life there was slower, and it had a calming aesthetic away from the hustle and bustle of downtown. However, in the last decade or so, Porur has gained prominence in the limelight. Recent developments in infrastructure, such as roads, an influx of new businesses, and the construction of new residential communities have made Porur one of Chennai’s fastest-growing urban and business centres.
Porur is still unique in its mix of development and nature. There are many new apartment buildings for sale, ample amounts of retail space, and lifestyle amenities that extend from Commercial Street to the shores of Lake Porur; the lake continues to provide a refreshing natural element to the area. The current development of the area, together with its natural beauty, has created an attractive environment which families, professionals and investors find appealing because they want urban city services but need the tranquillity of residential suburbs.
Brief History Of Porur
The history of Porur stretches back many centuries prior to the establishment of its present-day vibrant residential and commercial character. The origins of the town can be traced back to the two major South Indian dynasties, the Chola Dynasty and the Pallava Dynasty, both of which had great influence in South India throughout history.
Based on historical records, it is widely accepted that Porur existed before the establishment of the Chola Empire. During the time of the Chola Empire, Porur served as the administrative headquarters of a region known as Perur Nadu, suggesting that it was an important administrative centre where governance of the area around it and its activities were conducted during the reign of the Chola Dynasty between approximately the 3rd Century BCE and the 13th Century CE.
In addition to its historical significance, the name "Porur" tells its own tale. Historians believe that Porur developed as a military site because the Tamil term 'Por', which means 'War' describes its original purpose. The Chola Empire maintained a massive army, which they used to conduct multiple battles throughout their military campaigns.
In addition to being well-managed and having a strong military presence, Porur also has great importance from a religious perspective. It is home to the famous ancient Ramanatheswarar temple, which was built around the 8th century CE for the worship of Lord Shiva during the Chola dynasty, and still draws in both believers and history buffs today. The temple is also one of the nine Navagraha temples located in Tondai Mandalam and is associated with the astrological planet Guru (Jupiter), giving it further spiritual significance.
A few short centuries later, Porur would enter an entirely different phase of existence. By the 1960s, Porur was still a small, quiet village that was part of the Saidapet taluk of Chengalpattu District; life was slow in the village and it was not well known compared to the large city of Madras which is only a short distance away. Porur was not expected to experience any changes in the near future.
However, change was already starting to happen in the vicinity of Porur as the Mount-Poonamallee Road began being developed as an industrial corridor with factories and chemical plants being built along the road. This new industrial activity would have a long-term impact on the surrounding areas, and Porur would ultimately transform thanks to this new economic development.
Porur was designated as a Grade-I Town Panchayat on October 1, 1977. This change improved the governance of Porur through added centralized resources, better administrative capacity to administer its village, and better opportunities for improving the physical infrastructure (roads, community centres, etc.) than previously allowed under its previous designation as a village panchayat. On February 24, 1982, Porur achieved another milestone by being upgraded again to a Selection Grade Town Panchayat.
These developments started the process of transforming Porur from an ordinary village to a developing community. As Porur continues to grow because of its new infrastructure, improved connectivity, and the growth of Chennai’s urban boundaries, it is clear that Porur will continue to grow and adjust to meet the needs of its residents.
This journey from an old administrative centre, religious focal point, to a contemporary residential and industrial area is reflective of the ability of Porur to adapt with the growth of time. The multi-layered history of Porur provides the foundation for any person to observe that this is more than just another location, but is an area that has a lot of history associated with it.
Strategic Location and Connectivity
The Porur became a well-known spot because of its location and its transportation links. The area establishes direct connections to important parts of the Chennai metropolis through its position on Mount-Poonamallee Road, which serves as a major transportation link.
Porur provides efficient access to multiple major areas that include Guindy, Vadapalani, Koyambedu and Poonamallee. Residents of Porur can travel through the city because the area connects to the Chennai Bypass Road.
Commuting daily by any means, this connectivity benefits residents greatly. The residents of Porur can reach their destinations, which include the city centre, multiple industrial areas and an IT park, because of the various routes that connect these locations.
Educational Institutions and Healthcare Facilities
Porur has several excellent educational institutions (schools and colleges) and healthcare facilities available to you as an ideal area to live with your family.
One of the larger institutions in this area is Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research, which is a large university offering medical, dental, and allied health sciences education. Along with its academic offerings, the Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre provides state-of-the-art medical care to local residents.
In addition to the higher education facilities, numerous high-quality schools and private colleges are located within the Porur area, providing access to an endless supply of educated children from around the city (and other parts of Tamil Nadu).
Quickly Growing Real Estate Development
Porur has become a very quickly developing real estate market in Chennai. There have been several new residential and commercial projects introduced over the last few years.
Developers are creating many new modern residential developments, from apartments, gated communities, and villas. There are lots of options for people looking for any type of home, from a small apartment to a super-large one, so it is very attractive for families, individuals and investors.
The location, close to places providing employment, combined with the growing infrastructure in the area, continues to support demand for real estate. Therefore, Porur is viewed as a great place to invest in real estate in Chennai.
